MODEL 1853 SLANTING BREECH SHARPS CARBINE

Presented here is a great specimen of an early Sharps Model 1852 carbine referred to as the ‘Slant Breech’ or ‘Sloping Breech’ model. Often confused with the similar "John Brown Sharps” and "Beecher’s Bibles”, this fine condition Model 1852 carbine is one of an estimated 5,000 such pieces made, and is the forerunner of the more famous model Sharps carbines of the Civil War. The single-shot, percussion firearm is a .52 caliber, breechloading firearm invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. It is constructed without the early tape primer ignition system of its predecessor and employs Sharps’ first side-hammer, percussion slant breech design. The 1852 date on this model weapon signifies the patent year in which Christian Sharps invented his ingenious pellet priming mechanical system and integrated it into the upper forward section of the lockplate.

This is the Sharps Carbine that is known as the "John Brown Model” in prime serial number range 14025. First manufactured by Robbins and Lawrence, Windsor, Vermont and then later manufactured by Sharps in Hartford, Connecticut. The total number of carbines manufactured is approximately 10,500. Early production models had all brass furniture, including the patchbox. Later models have iron fixtures. Stocks are made from walnut. The barrels were 21 ½ inches in length and marked SHARPS RIFLE/MANUFG.CO./HARTFORD, CONN. The tang is marked SHARPS/PATENT/1848 and the serial number. The lockplate is marked SHARPS/PATENT/1848. Sling bar is located on the left side.

Offered is carbine number 14025 All metal parts are a dusky gray the bore has very good rifling with some pitting. The stock has a crack on both sides of the wrist but is very solid. The sling bar is complete and the hardware is brass. This carbine will be the center piece of a collection.
