Civil War Military Model 1863 Pattern Sharps Cavalry Carbine Issued to the 4th NY Cavalry
Item #: DROL3316

It is an original and classic Civil War Sharps cavalry carbine. It comes with a letter from the national archives stating it most probable was issued to Co.F 4th New York Cavalry. The letter and paper work is pictured. This carbine was issued to the unit in 1864 after Gettysburg. The monument to the 4th New York Volunteer Cavalry Regiment is south of Gettysburg on Pleasonton Avenue north of the Pennsylvania State Monument. (Pleasonton Avenue tour map) It was dedicated by the State of New York in 1889.

Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Pruyn commanded the regiment during the Gettysburg campaign, It consisted of 298 men and was assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, Cavalry Corps.

This is the model 1863 and is so marked on the top of the barrel "NEW MODEL 1863". It also has the Sharps Rifle Company maker mark and Hartford, Connecticut production location. The lockplate has the clear Sharps patent mark and dates. As you can see all of the Sharps markings and patent dates are still present throughout the gun. The action catches on both of the two positions. It has the serial number of "C,1047" on the tang of the frame and it matches the number underneath the barrel. This number is the sharps way of marking it being the 101,047 produced Sharps. This number is well within the Civil War production ranges. The barrel is full-length and has the original front sight intact. The bore of the gun has nice lands and grooves still visible. At the breech of the barrel, it has the correct Sharps "E.A.W." style inspector initials. The stock is walnut and you can see the outline of the inspector cartouche underneath the saddle ring bar. This stamps as well as the small sub inspector letters and initials on other parts of the gun let us know that the gun is a military model rather than being a civilian purchased one. The stock has the untouched light tone with service nicks wear and dings you expect from a gun that was actually used. This is a great Civil War military model Sharps cavalry carbine that has a known history.
