February 19, 1862
S. Meyer, Canton, Stark County, Ohio. To Governor David Tod. Letter recommending Francis J. Meyer to Tod's favorable consideration; and stating that Francis J. Meyer was 1st Lieutenant of the 3rd Independent Battery, Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery raised in Canton, Stark County, and vicinity, that from the commencement of the war, Francis J. Meyer had been one of the most prominent and unquestionable Union men and had probably done more for the good cause than any man in Stark County, that Francis J. Meyer, by indefatigable exertion, got up several companies in Stark County and neighboring counties, that it was owing to Francis J. Meyer's efforts that the 3rd Independent Battery, Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery was raised, that Francis J. Meyer deserved the Captaincy of said company, and that he said this as a late political adversary and opponent of Francis J. Meyer.

Family History is AMAZING:

Father Andrew Meyer

• Born in 1762 in Bonn, Prussia.

• Died June 27, 1848, in Canton.

• Emigrated to Baltimore in 1802.

• Fought with the United States in War of 1812; bought and outfitted two ships.

Stark Connection

• Arrived in Canton in 1818.

• As compensation for lost warships, he was awarded land west of downtown.

• Expanded his property to 3,000 acres, which became Sweet Spring Farm, then Ohio’s largest wheat farm.

• Meyers Lake named for him.

• Local legend has it that a strongbox, filled with gold, is buried on the grounds of the former Meyer estate, probably in the area that’s now home to Lehman school.

Quotable

"A favorite pastime for decades was a lazy afternoon at Meyers Lake, the crown jewel of Canton. The lake and the amusement park built on its shores were named for Andrew Meyer, who acquired it in 1817 as reparations for his help during the War of 1812.”
