American attorney and politician (1821-1894) who, as the pro-secession governor of Georgia, led his state into the Confederacy at the start of the Civil War. Conversely, he defied the Confederacy’s wartime policies and denounced Confederate President Jefferson Davis as a tyrant. After the war, he became chief justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia and then a millionaire as president of the Western and Atlantic Railroad. The Citizens Bank of Georgia check, 6.5 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Joseph E. Brown, payable to Dade Levac Co. for $1000, January 20, 1874.
